Weekend C.A.R.E. – Backpack Program
The Breckenridge United Methodist Church has partnered with the Breckenridge Community Schools to operate a Weekend C.A.R.E food program. This program was implemented in January 2017 for the Breckenridge Elementary students (kindergarten through 5th grade) who qualify.
The program is expanding for the 2020 – 2021 school year to include Breckenridge middle school students.
Community volunteers(organizations, churches, civic groups and individuals) help pack the backpacks every two weeks and the school administration distributes the backpacks to the students.
Most of our food is purchased from the Greater Lansing Food Bank. This project has been funded by a startup grant through the Gratiot County Community Foundation, donations and the support of the United Methodist Church.
The hope is to create a continuous funding source that would fund this program for as long it is needed.
Estimated funding per child is $3.70 per weekend backpack.
